In 2009, former Federal Heights police officer Mark Magness admitted using excessive force against a suspect but kept his job.

2014, Magness did it again, beating an in-custody robbery suspect. Magness pleaded guilty to assault, but this time he was fired.

Federal Heights Police Chief Karl Wilmes, who wasn’t at the department in 2009, said he didn’t know why Magness wasn’t fired the first time. We do. There wasn’t a recording.

The beating last December was recorded by Magness’ own body camera and is undeniable proof he was out of control and shouldn’t wear a badge.

Further, the recording shows how cameras are a useful tool that hold police — and citizens — accountable.
