“We are putting a television studio in the middle of our newsroom.”
That is the way that I first had described to me. I was immediately hooked. As a member of a generation that no longer watches television but consumes my media online I knew that I had to be involved. It took a very short time after joining The Denver Post staff in November 2014 to realize that we were on to something incredibly special.
DPTV produces an huge amount of video content in a small studio, hand-built by photographers and editors right in the middle of the award-winning newsroom. DPTV’s staple content is , who also does interviews that dig deeper into some of the paper’s big stories. The station also features a and a , as well as film and video game reviews.
The Denver Post Television studios are made up of three stages. Our main stage, which handles the brunt of our larger shows, a news stage and a new stand-up stage. The Sports Show, The Cannabist Show, Reaction Shot and Game On are all shot in “Studio One”, the main stage, but turn around and you’ll find the desk where Hughes does Up-To Date five days a week. Recently we’ve built a second studio, Studio B, and are designing all new programming for the Postap audience. and are the first regular shows coming out of this new feature, with many more to come.
Our studios turn on their lights every morning at 8 a.m., and they burn bright through the day. They are in use 12 hours a day, five days a week. It is a well-choreographed dance of DPTV producers and techs flipping the stages, spinning the cameras, updating and maintaining the studio at DPTV. We are only successful because every member of our team gives 110% on a daily basis. Made up entirely of photographers and picture editors (and one former TV anchor) we always have to learn something new, while aggressively expanding what we’re doing next.
