A Denver man convicted of using phony $50 bills in Silverthorne in January was sentenced this week to 10 days in jail and two years of probation.

Gary M. Migliaccio, 29, used the fake currency to buy gift cards, telling store clerks he was giving them as gifts to family members.

For the felony forgery and misdemeanor theft charges, he also must do 120 hours of community service, undergo a mental health evaluation and refrain from using alcohol or illegal drugs.

“Technology improvements have made counterfeiting much easier and more difficult to detect,” Summit County District Attorney Bruce Brown said in a statement. “We recommend that merchants examine currency, particularly larger bills, to make sure that they are legitimate.”
