Douglas County authorities say one person has come forward to have their gun tested after investigators Thursday offered to rule out rifles’ involvement in of a Monument man.

Sgt. Ron Hanavan, spokesman for the county sheriff’s office, said Monday the investigation into the death of 60-year-old Glenn Martin is still “open and ongoing.”

Hanavan said testing on the gun submitted to investigators has not been completed.

“The testing should take about a week or so,” he said.

Martin was killed July 3 in Rainbow Falls Park, a campground in Pike National Forest. Authorities say he appears to have been slain by an errant bullet.

Signs at the campground show shooting is prohibited. Authorities say Martin was shot once.

With so many gun enthusiasts in the Rainbow Falls Park area, stray bullets and have been blamed for close calls, especially within the past year.

The forest service on Friday announced plans to designate land in Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest for recreational shooting — part of a long-term effort to protect people living near the forests and using them.

The proposal calls for initially setting aside designated shooting areas at Allenspark in Boulder County and Devils Nose in Clear Creek County. It also identifies land suitable for recreational shooting that covers about 80 percent of the forests. The other 20 percent, near subdivisions or heavily used for other recreation, will be designated as not suitable for recreational shooting.

The last accidental shooting death in Pike National Forest was in 2009, when a after his friend accidentally shot him at South Rampart Shooting Range. Officials .
