The Denver District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday charged a man with assault, accusing him of attacking a police officer after he was caught trying to buy a Rolex watch with a phony ID and pre-paid credit card.

Besides the second-degree assault charge, officials say Delano Medina, 31, also faces charges of escape, forgery and criminal attempt to commit theft.

The DA’s office says that on Dec. 5, 2014, at a jewelry store inside the Cherry Creek Shopping Center, Medina tried to fraudulently purchase a $9,800 Rolex watch, assaulted an officer who confronted him, and then tried to flee. Medina was taken into custody and was found to have 12 outstanding warrants for his arrest.

The case was originally referred for possible federal charges. However it was learned earlier this month that federal charges will not be filed, enabling the state to file charges.

Currently in the custody of the Department of Corrections on an unrelated matter, Medina is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court on July 28.
