Jefferson County authorities have identified a 35-year-old registered sex offender accused of attempted murder in a Monday

Chuck Martinez is being held at the county’s jail in lieu of $1 million bond on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and domestic violence, the county sheriff’s office said Wednesday.

Martinez appeared in court Wednesday morning and county prosecutors say formal charges will be filed against him on July 21.

Deputies discovered Martinez’s girlfriend walking through an apartment complex on the 3500 block of South Nelson Circle about 7:45 p.m. Monday, authorities say. She was found covered in blood with a wound to her head.

Officials say her injuries were “very serious,” including a skull fracture and brain bleed, according to an arrest affidavit.

Mark Techmeyer, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said authorities believe the woman was attacked by Martinez in an apartment they shared.

Investigators who searched the home found it covered in blood, the affidavit said.

One witness told a detective that Martinez had just been released from prison.

Colorado Bureau of Investigation records show Martinez has been arrested several times since 1998 on charges including sexual assault, illegal discharge of a firearm and probation violations.

According to the affidavit, Martinez’s was so injured that she couldn’t speak when investigators tried to question her about the alleged attack. A detective showed her a photo of Martinez and “asked if he had been responsible for her injuries.”

The woman blinked to say yes, according to the affidavit.
