Forecasters are calling for a hot day in Denver on Friday ahead of a cold front expected to move into the Front Range by Sunday and bring unsettled weather into late next week.

The National Weather Service in Boulder is calling for a high near 94 degrees in the city with mostly sunny skies. There is a 10 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon.

“There will be a slight chance of afternoon and early evening thunderstorms,” the weather service said in a forecast bulletin. “Most of the storms will be high-based and produce gusty winds to 50 mph with limited rainfall.”

Over the far northeast plains, where low level moisture will be deeper, forecasters say an isolated severe storm will be possible with strong winds and large hail.

“Moisture will increase over the plains through the day Saturday,” the bulletin said. “This, combined with cold front and an upper level system, will bring a chance for showers and storms late Saturday through Sunday.”

Forecasters say the main threats from the weekend storms on the plains will be brief moderate to heavy rain and gusty winds.

“Unsettled weather will continue over the region Monday through Thursday as monsoon moisture remains over Colorado,” the bulletin said. “This will keep a slight chance of thunderstorms for each day with at or just below normal temperatures.”
