The co-owners of cannabis-friendly Sexpot Comedy are throwing a benefit performance Saturday night for a proposed ballot initiative to allow marijuana consumption at some businesses.
The backers of the pot consumption ballot measure are in the petitioning phase. They have until early August to collect 4,726 signatures to put the initiative on Denver’s Nov. 3 ballot.
Fundraising is underway. Sexpot co-owner Kayvan Khalatbari, who in May, says he donated $2,500 to help launch the Campaign for Limited Social Use. And says the campaign has collected at least another $8,650 toward a goal of $30,000, in part to aid the petition drive.
Saturday’s comedy show, with comedians Rob Gleeson and Sean White, begins at 8 p.m. at 3 Kings Tavern, 60 S. Broadway. Admission is $10. The event is also a preview for next month’s High Plains Comedy Festival.
The ballot measure’s organizers include marijuana law firm Vicente Sederberg and activist Mason Tvert. They that found 56 percent of likely Denver voters would support consumption in commercial establishments that opt in, with restrictions. (In another blog post, I looked at on the poll results.)
Sexpot’s co-owner is comedian Andy Juett. Khalatbari also co-owns the Denver Relief dispensary and Sexy Pizza shops. He says the latter might take advantage if the ballot initiative passes.
“Sexy Pizza South Pearl would consider allowing cannabis consumption on our patio area behind our restaurant,” he said in a news release. “We want to provide an environment that offers people alternatives so that they don’t feel like drinking is their only social outlet.”
