Train geeks will get a rare treat on Saturday when the Regional Transportation District offers free tours of its commuter rail maintenance facility.
The public will be able to tour the 230,000 square foot facility between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The site is located at 613 W. 48th Ave., in Denver.
The building will be used to maintain, clean and store up to 80 new commuter rail cars that will operate on the East Rail (A) Line, Gold (G) Line, the North west Rail (B) Line to Westminster and the North Metro Rail (N) line.
The tour will include the Operation Control Center — the “brain” of the train system — the shop floor where the trains are serviced and receive safety checks, and commuter rail vehicles already being housed and maintained at the facility, according to RTD.
There will be a media tour at 9 a.m., followed by speeches from transportation officials at 10 a.m.
A Leadership and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certificate will also be unveiled Saturday for the facility.
