Showers and thunderstorms are forecast for Denver on Monday afternoon in what’s expected to be a wet start to the week.
The National Weather Service in Boulder is calling for a high near 89 degrees in the city with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 4 p.m. Skies will be mostly cloudy, forecasters say.
“An upper level disturbance will move across Colorado today and tonight,” the weather service said in a forecast bulletin. “Expect an increase in chances of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening over the mountains and plains.”
As precipitation moves through, forecasters says cooler temperatures will follow.
“Scattered rain showers are also expected over the mountains (Monday) morning as the disturbance approaches,” the bulletin said. “With the stronger storms, expect heavy rain and gusty winds to 50 mph.”
Showers are expected to decrease from west to east as the day continues on.
“In the wake of the disturbance, gusty west winds to 45 mph will develop over the higher mountains and exposed east slopes after midnight,” said the bulletin.
Scattered thunderstorms are expected to linger over northeast Colorado.
“Elsewhere, look for gusty westerly winds in and near the Front Range along with mostly dry and warm conditions,” the bulletin said.
Warm, dry weather is expected to return Wednesday.
