Denver Fire Department broke ground Tuesday morning on a new station at Denver International Airport.
Fire Station 35, located at 25365 E 75th Avenue, is the fifth fire station at the airport. The building will measure about 18,000 square feet, have four equipment four bays, and its architecture will resemble an airplane hangar, according to a release.
“Metal panels on the façade will give it a modern look, adding texture that gives the building depth and different appearances throughout the day as sunshine and shadows create interesting visual effects,” the release said.
The new station’s firefighters’ primary duty is structure fires and other incidents in the airport’s public areas, per the release.
“This new fire station will enhance the ability for our partners at the Denver Fire Department to respond to areas that are farther away from the airfield, such as the Federal Aviation Administration’s radar control center, Peña Boulevard, Final Approach, the south campus and the new Westin Hotel and RTD train stations on airport property,” Denver International Airport CEO Kim Day said in the release.
One company of four firefighters with one fire engine will be stationed at Fire Station 35 around the clock. The station, which will get another engine in 2020, will be the first DFD airport station open to the public. The other four DFD airport stations, which focus on aircraft rescue firefighting and structural response, are closed to the public due to their location on the airfield.
Construction on Station 35 will be completed by summer 2016, according to the release.
