The Golden-Littleton football matchup that opened up Zero Week on Thursday night to start the 2015 season has significant ties to a different time.

The two programs were charter members of the old Central Suburban League that ran from 1929-54.

Golden, Colorado’s oldest high school, and Littleton were joined in those days in the Central Suburban by Aurora, Arvada, Englewood and Wheat Ridge.

In fact, Littleton beat Golden to win the 1952 league title.

The league disbanded three years later, but remains a favorite memory, including for Maurice “Stringy” Ervin, the former longtime swimming and diving coach for the Lions whose father was school principal.

On Thursday night, the Lions beat the Demons 21-0 in Class 4A nonleague.
