SONOMA, Calif. — Scott Dixon captured his fourth IndyCar championship by winning the season finale Sunday, snatching the title from Juan Pablo Montoya.

But his first thoughts were about Justin Wilson, the Dacono resident who died one week ago of injuries he suffered in a race at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa.

Dixon was one of the many supporters who remained in Pennsylvania to stay with Wilson’s family at the hospital.

“Our thoughts and prayers, first, are for Justin’s family,” Dixon said after exiting his car.

Wilson was honored before Sunday’s race with a tribute video, a moment of silence and the playing of “God Save the Queen,” national anthem of his native England.

Oriol Servia flew in from London overnight Wednesday to drive Wilson’s car, a request made by Wilson’s family. He finished 12th.

Montoya led the points from the season-opening race right until the final lap Sunday. But he finished the race in sixth place, which allowed Dixon to tie him in the standings.

A tribute T-shirt has been made with all proceeds earmarked for a fund for Wilson’s two young daughters.

“I expected maybe a few T-shirt sales, but not a few thousand,” brother Stefan Wilson said. “Everyone has just been so amazing and helping us take care of them.”
