Huge overhead lights inside Denver International Airport flashed out and all three security lines halted for about five minutes Friday morning, triggering a slight operational delay at the beginning of a busy holiday weekend.
“We had pretty significant power bump,” said Laura Coale, DIA spokeswoman. “The biggest thing people will notice is that its dark in the terminal.”
Francie Swidler, a Denver Post employee anxious to catch her flight to Chicago to be a maid of honor at a wedding, ran to her flight after she made it through the reopened security lines.
“The airlines were aware of the problem. They held my flight,” she said.
DIA:
It was a bit spooky though at 5:40 a.m. when the main light source at the apex of the tent-like structure that is the terminal blinked out, Swidler said.
The lights in the security scanners also shut off and a guard announced that there would be a short delay. During that time, the lines to the security area backed up to well beyond 100 people, Swidler said.
Coale said a Transportation Security Administration supervisor told her that their operations were not affected by the power bump.
Some of the escalators were still not working though, she said. Electricians are working as urgently as they can to remedy the problem, she said.
