Interview with Jeffery Bolling, owner and jewelry designer

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: After leaving the U.S. Army, I started in 1988 at Cowell and Hubbard Fine Jewelers in Akron, Colo., later to be named Bailey Banks and Biddle. Moving to several states as store manager, I started a career as a jewelry salesmen selling and designing jewelry for jewelry stores around the country.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: Want distinguishes Jeffery B Jewelers is our sourcing of diamonds and our unique ability of custom jewelry designing. I do all designing in 3-D on computer screen, using three different jewelry-designing software programs. I have designed jewelry for stores around the country and the world, working with large diamond jewelry manufacturers. Experience like mine is unprecedented in the industry. Now, with my son, Christian Bolling, studying the art of watch making at Gem City College in Illinois and my wife, Leslie, a recent Gemological Institute of America graduate, our family business is more complete than any jewelry store in the state, possibly the whole U.S.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: Making people happy with an heirloom piece of jewelry that will last long after I am gone. Jewelry is an item like no other — it allows you to become a part of another family’s story forever. My goal is to create a family business — that we be a hallmark for trust, honest and love that will last years after I am dead and gone. Love may sound over the top to some, but that is true of Jeffery B. I love what I do. I love jewelry. I love helping people create the next jewelry item. That’s why my tag line is: “When It’s Love … It’s Jeffery B.”

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Growth. It sounds like a good problem, but managing growth can be a true challenge. We are now in a position to hire people and build more inventory. We are now currently implementing a new point-of-sales system that is much more robust and will help us effectively manage our growth. We are looking forward to this Christmas season, meeting the challenges of our growing customer base.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: Everything is done in house. I do the custom designs, we have our own 3-D printer that prints my designs in wax, and our jeweler will cast, set stones, polish and finish right in store. Soon, with my son will do the same with watches.
