Trent Matthews (Loveland Reporter Herald)

FORT COLLINS — Colorado State senior safety Trent Matthews has been named a member of the 11-man Football Bowl Subdivision Allstate/American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team, honoring Matthews for his community involvement and off-the-the-field activities.

Matthews has been a youth football coach in Fort Collins summer camps and otherwise heavily involved in the program, and is a regular visitor to area schools, serving as a mentor. Matthews, from Converse, Texas, already has graduated and is working towards a master’s degree this fall. Because he has a Tuesday evening class, he has to leave and isn’t available to the media in the post-practice interview window on Tuesdays, but he met with reporters early Tuesday afternoon after the honor was announced.

“It’s my passion. My major is to help kids,” Matthews told reporters. “I want to go into coaching eventually. I want to teach. My goal is to better myself by bettering kids.

“That’s my passion, that’s my job. I’m at peace when I do those things.”

CSU coach Mike Bobo said his first meeting with Matthews was memorable.

“When he came into the office and sat down, it was about an hour,” Bobo said after practice. “Just listening to this young man talk, and it really wasn’t about what we need to do in football, how we’re going to be this year. It was about him, and who he is, and where’s he’s from and what he’s about. You could tell he was a special kid.”

“I’m really, really happy for him. That’s a prestigious award.”

Voting for a Good Works team captain is being conducted .
