With a years-long patent battle settled, local biofuels company Gevo Inc. plans to invest $5 million to ramp up production of isobutanol, a fuel and chemical alternative, company officials announced Wednesday.
Officials for , based in unincorporated Douglas County, outlined a slate of initiatives for 2016 aimed at the eventual commercialization of isobutanol, a four-carbon alcohol.
Those targets include: increasing isobutanol production at the company’s Luverne, Minn., facility by more than sevenfold to between 750,000 to 1million gallons; and decreasing production costs; increasing sales of isobutanol to the alcohol-to-jet, marina, off-road and solvents markets.
Gevo (Nasdaq: GEVO) plans to spend $5 million to make capital improvements at the Luverne plant during the next three to six months, officials said.
Last month, Gevo , a joint venture of BP and DuPont. Gevo and Butamax have been entangled in the patent battle .
