Denver Mayor Wellington Webb declares Ray Bourque Blvd. as he hands a street sign to Colorado Avalanche player Ray Bourque during a celebration at the City and County Building on June 11, 2001.
Re: “Webb: Remembering the Colorado Avalanche’s arrival in Denver 20 years ago,” Oct. 4 guest commentary.
I hung on every word of former Mayor Wellington Webb’s recounting of the spectacular win that brought Denver its first Stanley Cup. At the time, I was manager of KHOW-AM and the hunt for the cup became a bit of a fixation for our legendary morning team, Hal and Charley.
But for the mayor, he too is a champion in Denver. On his watch, he not only kept time, he warped time into developments that the entire metro area continues to enjoy. His commitment to excellence is the cornerstone of the re-development of Denver’s civic square — including the Denver Art Museum, the Denver Public Library, and a little number called the Pepsi Center.
In my family, Wellington Webb is a champion. Denver needs a Webb Cup to honor this remarkable citizen of the West.
