Brian Carey is highly thought of as he enters his first season of college basketball.
Last season’s Mr. Colorado Basketball by The Denver Post, Carey, a Denver East graduate, is projected as freshman of the year in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in the 2015-16 season.
A freshman at Texas Southern, Carey was selected recently by the SWAC page online.
“It’s a nice little preseason thing,” said East coach Rudy Carey, Brian’s uncle.
The younger Carey led Colorado in scoring the past season and helped the Angels make the Class 5A semifinals at the University of Colorado’s Coors Events Center in Boulder. He also played in the previous two finales, winning as a junior.
Rudy Carey said Brian “is working hard. It’s new for him and he has his work cut out for him. But he likes it.”
Preseason practice began the past weekend.
