Police arrested a man wanted on a robbery charge after a standoff that lasted several hours Friday afternoon and then took him to a hospital with self-inflicted injuries, authorities say.

The suspect, who has not been identified, had been holed up in a home on the 1200 block of South Benton Street for more than six hours, Andrea Joo, Lakewood police spokeswoman, said about 8:20 p.m.

The man’s injuries are not considered life threatening, Joo said.

The suspect had been speaking with a police negotiator by phone, but refused to come out of the house.

The standoff began at 3 p.m. after police received a tip that the robbery and car theft suspect was inside the home.

When police knocked on the door, the man came out of his house briefly but quickly went back inside the home.

He allegedly told his daughter that he would rather die than go back to prison, Joo said.

Minutes later, the man’s daughter and two grandchildren left the home safely, Joo said.

The man hadn’t made any threats and nobody was in harm’s way, so police focused on trying to get the man to surrender peacefully.
