
The run-up to Hillary Clinton’s announcement last week that had all the suspense of a child’s bedtime story you’ve heard a hundred times. No one really expected her to stick to the position she had expressed dozens of times as secretary of state, namely that TPP was “the gold standard” of trade deals, and let Bernie Sanders outflank her too far on the left.
And she didn’t.
Still, this is disappointing on two levels. First, it suggests again how susceptible Clinton’s views are to the political winds of the moment as opposed to reflecting bedrock principle. Second, it indicates the power of protectionism in the activist Democratic base — a bad sign for future U.S. prosperity.
