DENVER BRONCOS HIGH SCHOOL COACH OF THE WEEK
Doug Johnson
School: Class 4A Longmont Trojans, ranked No. 2 in The Associated Press 4A poll, Longs Peak League.
Record: 7-0 overall and 2-0 in league in 2015; 117-58 career.
Coaching résumé: Assistant at Lyons from 1990-91, Skyline in 1992 and Longmont from 1993-99. Head coach at Longmont since 2000.
Life lines: Age 46. Native of Longmont. Graduated from Lyons High School in 1988 and the University of Northern Colorado in 1992; received a degree in mathematics education and a master’s in 1994. Teaches honors trigonometry, pre-calculus and algebra at Longmont.
Back in his day: Running back and safety at Lyons from 1985-87, all-Boulder County as a senior. Safety at UNC from 1988-89; knee injury ended his career.
Last week: It appeared the Trojans were about to be shut out at home by No. 3 Windsor on Thursday. Starting quarterback David Speidel left the game on the first drive with an injury, and freshman Oakley Dehning replaced him.
Longmont hadn’t been able to generate much offense, and it was Dehning’s first action. And there were just seconds to play.
But Dehning hooked up with Eli Sullivan for a 45-yard touchdown pass with six seconds remaining, his only completion of the game. It got better — Windsor jumped offside on the conversion attempt and Conlan Berger ran it in.
Final score: Longmont 8, Windsor 7.
Johnson said of his team’s only touchdown, “We were in the wrong formation and I don’t think it was a legal formation … not to throw the refs under the bus.”
Truth was, Johnson said, “our defense won the game for us and Logan Goodner played an amazing linebacker for us.”
Avery Peterson added three sacks.
State runners-up a year ago, the Trojans knew their coach would go for a two-pointer as Johnson said “it’s a decision we make before the drive.”
It worked.
One night later, Johnson watched brother Joe’s ThunderRidge Grizzlies upset Regis Jesuit 14-10. He said his “nephew (Zeke, a junior) ran the ball tough.”
Pretty good Week 7 if you’re a Johnson. Neil H. Devlin, The Denver Post
