A woman has been charged with animal cruelty after she fatally kicked a dog during a domestic confrontation in which her boyfriend was cited with allegedly assaulting her.

Kanei Love, 25, has been charged with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals after killing the family dog, according to a news release by Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for District Attorney Mitch Morrissey.

Melvin Lewis, 22, has been cited with assault for allegedly striking Love during the argument.

The name and breed of the dog were not listed in the news release.

On Sunday, Lewis and Love were having a fight when Love booted the dog into the air. The dog died as a result, according to the news release.

Love was arrested and later released on a $2,000 bond. She is scheduled to be formally advised on the charge on Nov. 2 in Denver County Court.
