The temperature at Denver International Airport dropped below freezing Wednesday for the first day of the season in what has otherwise been a fairly balmy October.

“It finally dropped below freezing,” said Dave Barjenbruch, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Boulder. “We’ve been 6.1 degrees above normal this October.”

October of 2015 has been balmy with many days in a row above 80 degrees, he said. It took until the 28th to drop to freezing or below, he added.

DIA registered 29 degrees and might go even lower before the sun rises, he said at 6 a.m. DIA also received a trace of rain overnight, Barjenbruch said.

Between 1 and 3 inches of snow fell in the mountains Tuesday and early Wednesday morning, he said.

“There are still some slick spots in the mountains so people need to be careful driving,” Barjenbruch said.

The temperature is expected to rise to 62 degrees Wednesday in the Denver area.

The high will be between 59 and 60 on Thursday, before it is in the lower 50s on Friday, according to forecasts.

Temperatures will rise into the 60s for Halloween on Saturday and up to the high 60s on Sunday, the first day of November.
