Getting your player ready...

Denver-based Frontier Airlines fired the latest round in the competition for holiday travelers with the offer of double frequent flier miles on all new bookings through Dec. 31.

“For those customers who travel less frequently, they can now earn travel much more quickly,” Frontier chief commercial officer Daniel Shurz said in a statement. “Moderate and more frequent travelers also can earn Elite status more quickly.”

Air travel has become increasingly competitive as industry profit margins are at record levels due primarily to low oil prices.

This allows many airlines — including legacy carriers like American and Delta — .

With this promotion, Frontier hopes to sway customers away from the competition and onto its planes, said spokesman Jim Faulkner said in an e-mail.

“The double miles are way for us to thank customers for their loyalty and to entice new customers to try us — especially with our improved on-time performance,” he said.

The airline’s renewed focus on operational performance is yielding results. Frontier’s on-time rate jumped14 percent between June and August, according to the most recent federal data available.

Frontier overhauled its frequent flyer program in 2014 into a two-tier program with basic and “elite” levels.

Elite status is reached once a flyer reaches either 20,000 frequent flyer miles or flies 25 flight segments in a 12-month period. Awards include priority check-in, free advance seat assignments, some fee waivers and free carry-on bag.

The double miles promotion only applies to new bookings made after 9:59 p.m. on Nov. 1. Tickets must be purchased and travel completed by 9:59 p.m. on Dec. 31, and there are no blackout dates.

An EarlyReturns account number is required at the time of booking.
