Getting your player ready...

Leave it to Donald Trump to pander — again — to a mindless segment of the electorate.

This time he’s targeting folks who are trigger-ready to spot evidence of a “war on Christmas” in an innocent decision by Starbucks that reduces the net number of reindeer, snowflakes and ornaments thrust upon us at this time of year — the sort of people capable of getting upset at the sight of plain red cups rather than ones with seasonal images.

“I don’t know. Seriously, I don’t care. By the way, that’s the end of that lease [at Trump Tower] but who cares.”

As other commentators have noted, . And the red color of the cup is itself, well, seasonal (Santa doesn’t wear brown, does he?).

Perhaps more to the point, why would anyone concerned that Christmas be marked with traditional respect care whether a private business displays snowmen, reindeer and snowflakes on its cups? Those are, after all, purely secular symbols that have nothing to do with holiday’s religious foundation.

Trump promised “we’re all going to be saying Merry Christmas again” if he’s elected. Thanks, Donald, but that’s one area where Americans don’t need political leadership.
