Denver police say at least two, possibly three, motorists drove over the body of a motorcyclist thrown from his bike early Wednesday on Interstate 25 and did not stop.

“These motorists know they ran over something,” said Sgt. Mike Farr, a traffic investigator. “Whether they know it was another human, I don’t know.”

Investigators are asking for witnesses to come forward and talk to detectives, adding that those who hit the motorcycle rider and kept going could face charges.

Police identified the motorcyclist only as a 61-year-old man.

A lone witness who talked to police told investigators the vehicles involved in the wreck include a semi-trailer with a white cab with red lettering, a box truck and a sedan.

Authorities say the semi’s trailer is a hopper-style that can carry grain or aggregates for asphalt, has three bins and has a dumper at the bottom.

Police say they need to talk to the drivers of the three vehicles.

Farr said several other vehicles stopped briefly before heading off.

“We know there was more than one witness to this collision,” he added.

The wreck happened about 4:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 25 near the Santa Fe Drive exit, police said. Investigators say the motorcyclist lost control and went down.

The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet, police say, but he did have on protective glasses.

The death is the 13th motorcycle fatality and 55th death on Denver’s roads this year. Last year, eight people died in Denver motorcycle crashes.

Police say witnesses can call Denver Metro Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
