A house fire that erupted early Thursday morning and fully engulfed a home in Centennial has been controlled, officials say.
Firefighters were alerted to a house fire in the 5300 block of Nichols Drive around 4:32 a.m., according to Battalion Chief Mark Stokes of Littleton Fire and Rescue.
The home appeared to be vacant upon firefighters’ arrival, and had real estate signs displayed, Stokes said. It had been listed for $1.2 million, he said.
“It was a complete loss,” Stokes said.
The cold weather and snow around the house made it more difficult to fight the fire, he said.
Water from the fire hoses froze and made the ground very icy, Stokes said. Two battalion chiefs were on scene. Firefighters fought the blaze with six engines and two aerial ladder trucks, he said.
The fire was described as controlled within an hour of the initial fire report and initial indications were that it may have started in the basement, Stokes said.
“We’re in the mop up phase,” he said just before 7 a.m.
The cause of the fire is now under investigation, he said.
