MONTROSE, Colo. (AP) — The gunman in a 2006 shooting death of an immigrant worker in Montrose is serving 30 years in Mexico’s federal prison system for the crime.
The Montrose Daily Press reports (http://bit.ly/1Rmu5Fn ) that Montrose police officials have learned that Miguel Godinez was recently sentenced to 30 years in prison for the shooting of 25-year-old Marco Vargas-Salvador in October 2006.
Godinez and two other men were wanted for the conflict with Vargas-Salvador but fled to Mexico.
In 2011, Mexican authorities arrested the three men, who were charged with first-degree murder committed in a foreign country. The two other men are appealing their convictions.
The Colorado Attorney General’s Office worked to prosecute the men under Mexico’s penal code, as is allowed by bilateral treaty.
