Re: “Former GOP state chairman Carl Williams remembered as a pioneer in TV, politics,” Dec. 2 The Spot blog post.

The perfect answer to an oft-asked question, “What kind of person do you want to represent you in the statehouse?,” would be: “Like Carl Williams!”

Elected to the Senate in 1968 (as was I), Carl brought dignity, humor, horse sense, and industry to an organization often short in those characteristics. He was a friend to all and his great smile defused many tense moments, even within his own Republican Party. His contributions to others are understated — as he would want. Not mentioned but perhaps of overriding importance was Carl’s spirituality, culminating in help for thousands of folks who may not have even recognized his name.

So a toast to Carl from his Senate buddies: “We love you!”
