
A sophomore jinx? Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey must have missed that memo.
McCaffrey, a three-time Denver Post All-Colorado offensive player of the year at Valor Christian, was announced Monday on ESPN as one of the finalists for the Heisman Trophy. He was selected alongside Alabama running back Derrick Henry and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson.

The 19-year-old Cardinal broke Oklahoma State’s Barry Sanders’ 27-year-old FBS record for all-purpose yards in a single season (3,250) on Saturday against Southern California in the Pac-12 title game. On the season, he has compiled 3,496 all-purpose yards. McCaffrey has carried the ball 319 times for 1,847 yards (second among FBS players this season) and eight TDs. He also has 41 catches for 540 yards and four TDs, and he’s thrown two TDs.
McCaffrey led Stanford (11-2) to the Rose Bowl where the team will face Iowa on Jan. 1 in Pasadena, Calif.
The winner of the Heisman Trophy will be announced on Dec. 12. The presentation show will begin airing at 6 p.m. on ESPN.
