Colorado is building outdoor recreation facilities at the cost of $4.7 million for its highest security prison as part of a settlement of a .
The prison does not currently have outdoor recreation for maximum-security prisoners, said Adrienne Jacobson, spokeswoman for the Colorado State Penitentiary in Cañon City.
“We’ve already started building the facilities,” Jacobson said Monday.
The high-security inmates currently exercise in small indoor gyms with a window.
As part of the agreement, the Colorado Department of Corrections will also build outdoor recreation facilities for some maximum-security prisoners at Sterling Correctional Facility, where condemned prisoners are held.
Most offenders at Sterling already have outdoor recreation facilities.
