One person was taken to the hospital with unidentified injuries and a family pet was killed after a house fire erupted early Tuesday morning in Centennial.
Three adults and three children escaped the home, but a Yorkshire terrier was killed in the blaze that was reported at 12:38 a.m. at 19182 E. Briarwood Drive in Centennial, said Eric Hurst, spokesman for South Metro Fire Rescue.
One person was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. It’s unclear whether that was the same person who was later taken to the hospital for treatment.
Seven fire trucks and about 25 firefighters responded to the fire.
When they arrived at the home fire was shooting out the front living room window and up the sides of the house, Hurst said. All six people who were inside the house had already evacuated.
The firefighters fought the blaze from the outside before crews entered the home and finished extinguishing the blaze. It was out in less than 20 minutes.
“It’s exactly the way we train incidents to go and that’s the way it went,” Hurst said.
Two fire investigators remained at the home through the night in an effort to determine the cause of the fire, he said.
