Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning’s return to the practice field is drawing near. Coach Gary Kubiak said he was hopeful that Manning would be able to start on-field throwing workouts Wednesday.

Quarterback Brock Osweiler will make his fourth start of the season against the Oakland Raiders, but Kubiak reiterated that it is currently on a week-by-week basis.

The process will be gradual for Manning to recover from his torn left plantar fascia , but doing football workouts is the next step. Kubiak said Manning has been throwing inside this past week, but not with much movement because of the boot.

“Peyton worked hard through the weekend, worked hard today,” Kubiak said. “It’s nothing like throwing the out route.”

Kubiak said Manning’s workouts, if everything goes according to plan, would entail some throwing on the side during practice. He said Manning’s not ready for team drills, yet.

“Could change, but right now we might go into a modified small workout with him,” Kubiak said.

Manning got the boot removed from his foot Friday and stayed in Denver to rehab his foot injury, which has held him out for the last three weeks. There’s no set timetable for Manning’s return, but all signs are swinging upward for him to be back at some point.
