The Colorado Avalanche Monday night rolled out the red carpet for 20 members of its 20th anniversary team, as selected by the fans.
In a pregame ceremony, the names of two goalies, six defensemen and a dozen forwards were illuminated on the ice, as each current and former player was announced and took his place. The group included Avs VP Joe Sakic, coach Patrick Roy and — drawing the biggest ovation — former great Peter Forsberg.
Members of the Arapahoe Warriors junior hockey team skated out to present the honorees with commemorative gifts.
The ceremony culminated when Sakic took the mic and thanked the fans for the honor.
“There’s one other event we’re looking forward to being on the ice together, and that’s at Coors Field,” Sakic said, referring to the alumni game against the Detroit Red Wings alumni.
The pregame ceremony also included a tribute to the architect of the Stanley Cup winning teams, Pierre Lacroix.
