Letap not be too quick to downplay Donald Trump’s bombastic campaign strategy as self-defeating. I seem to remember reading about this German guy in the 1920s who used the same over-the-top rhetoric to hornswoggle a seemingly intelligent electorate into accepting him as their leader.
He just substituted the word “Jews” for “Muslims.”

Donald Trump wants to ban Muslim immigration. Many of our fellow citizens want to ban or greatly restrict guns. Well-meaning regulators disallow medical drugs that don’t go through a billion dollars of testing. Other regulators have driven the development of new types of nuclear reactors out of the United States.
Zealous child-welfare officials arrest parents who let their children walk alone to the park. The NSA tries to make us safe by spying on every e-mail, Facebook post, phone call, tweet, and Web view.
All these fears are rational. The sum of all fears is a very safe dictatorship, even if that dictatorship is democratically empowered.
Any of us might be killed by a terrorist tomorrow. But surrendering liberty for a little safety is not American. Let us live free, even at the risk of our lives.
