A suspected drunk driver hit a slow-moving train in Loveland Wednesday and tried to flee the scene, police said.

The incident happened about 5:30 p.m. in the area of Fire Engine Red Road and South Roosevelt Avenue, according to a Loveland Police Department media release.

Officers, responding to a report of a vehicle in a ditch, found the vehicle about 75 feet south of the railroad tracks.

Loveland firefighters helped extract the driver from vehicle. He did “not appear to be injured,” the release said.

Police said the driver’s “vehicle had struck the slow-moving train and the driver tried to drive away.”

The driver, who was not identified, was taken into custody. Police suspect alcohol as a factor in the incident.

The incident tied up traffic in the area for about an hour.
