How did sophisticated, intellectual alt-rock geeks in Oakland ring in the New Year? With a dazzling set of dreamy pop courtesy of Luna, at the lovely Starline Social Club.
Luna frontman Dean Wareham has an impressive rock provenance as the founder of the influential late 80’s band Galaxie 500. While Galaxie 500 was much loved but short lived, Luna put out a string of impressive albums in the ’90s, most notably 1995’s “Penthouse.”
After a 10 year hiatus, the recently reformed Luna features Wareham on vocals and guitar, his glamorous wife Britta Phillips on bass, guitarist Sean Eden and drummer Lee Wall.
The band’s NYE set was pleasantly spacey but focused, replete with great moments like a sexy cover of the Serge Gainsbourg/Brigitte Bardot classic “Bonnie and Clyde.”
After a couple of strong West Coast appearances (Luna played San Diego on 12/29), we’re hoping to see an expanded Luna tour in 2016.
