The 2016 legislative session will take on that didn’t make it out of the 2015 session: physician-assisted suicide, which supporters call death with dignity.
Rep. Tracy Kraft-Tharp and Rep. Joann Ginal, D- Fort Collins, will lead a town hall-style meeting on the subject Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Covenant Village Senior Housing.
Covenant Village is located at 9153 Yarrow St. in Westminster.
Ginal and Rep. Lois Court, a Denver Democrat, are sponsoring House Bill 1054. Michael Merrifield, a Democrat from Colorado Springs, is the Senate sponsor. The text of the bill is available .
Last year, a House committee killed the bill on an 8-5 bipartisan vote. Members said the legislation needed more “guardrails,” and this year’s legislation, presumably, will provide that.
This year’s bill requires:
— Determining whether the requesting individual has a terminal illness, is capable of making an informed decision, and is making the request for aid-in-dying medication voluntarily;
–Requesting the individual to demonstrate proof of Colorado residency;
— Referring the individual to a consulting physician to confirm that the individual is qualified to request aid-in-dying medication;
— Providing full disclosures to ensure that the individual is making an informed decision; and
— Informing the individual of the right to rescind the request at any time.
