Dick Hilker asks for a show of hands on how many of us would be willing to buy a self-driving car. My hand is way up.
Automobile accidents are the fourth-leading cause of death in this country. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that highway crashes alone have an annual price tag of around $871 billion in economic loss and social harm.
The truth is humans are fallible; we drink, we get distracted, we get sleepy, we experience road rage and we just can’t see everything on a fast-moving road with only two eyes. If smart cars can reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on our roads, we all will benefit.
With all due respect to Mr. Hilker, if he wants to comment on technology issues in the future, he might think about dropping the AOL e-mail address.
