ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — Aspen officials say residents in the Colorado ski resort town and the surrounding area produce twice as much trash as the average American.

The Aspen Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1SlDDk9 ) that a study conducted last July and October by Weaver Consultant Group and LBA Associates found that the average Pitkin County resident produces 9.1 pounds of garbage each day. The national average is just 4.5 pounds per day.

City environmental health specialist Liz O’Connell said in a prepared statement that it’s important for officials to know what items are being thrown away that could instead be recycled or composted. She said she’s concerned about conserving resources and shortening the landfill’s lifespan.

Officials are planning public meetings in Aspen and Basalt to share the findings and gather feedback.
