Interview with Gary Roberts, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I have been in the pet industry since I was 13 years old. I began working for a bird breeder, cleaning bird aviaries. I then went to work for a pet store and, after several years running the store, I went to work for a pet supply distributor, selling supplies to pet stores, veterinarians, groomers and feed stores. From there I went to work for a distributor for the mass market, selling pet supplies to grocery stores, drug stores and department stores. I then went to work for the previous owner of Pet World, and when he retired I bought the business. I have owned Pet World since 1996.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Being the oldest pet store in Jefferson County, we have developed close relationships with our customers and their families. With seven employees and myself, we have a combined total of more than 95 years of pet experience and knowledge.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: That it’s not work to me. I enjoy coming in and helping customers with their pet needs. I like the challenge of finding new products that help our customers’ pets be as healthy as they can.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: The biggest misconception people tend to have is that our prices are higher because we are a small business. I work very hard to be as competitive on price as possible.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: We often hear people say they didn’t realize how large our store is, or the abundant variety of products we carry. I pack a lot of supplies in our store. We are not just a pet food shop — we are a true full-line store. We have a full fish room, bird room, small animal section and all of the supplies you need to care for your pets. We also sell the best brands of dog and cat foods.
