Sen. Kevin Grantham

State Sen. Kevin Grantham is trying to make the best of a bad situation. Cañon City High School, which is in his district, was last year after teens there sexted hundreds of images.

The case made international headlines, but ultimately .

“I think the investigation suggests that (this) was something the children didn’t understand,” local District Attorney Thomas LeDoux said in December.

“The investigation suggests these were kids doing stupid kid things.”

Grantham is trying to fix stupid.

The Republican senator worked with to produce a package of public service announcements.

The 30-second spots, available in English and Spanish, ask, “Is it worth it?”

“It’s painfully obvious, based on this episode, that we as parents and teachers as well as our students need to be more aware of what consequences are by engaging in these activities,” Grantham said in a statement. “Since it’s also clear that the sexting phenomenon isn’t limited to one school or community, my hope is that these PSAs can benefit schools across the entire state.”

A date and venue for the PSAs have not yet been announced.

According to the Senate Republican Press Office, sexting came up in Grantham’s town hall meeting in December. Parents and teachers discussed options to combat sexting, from tougher punishment to more education.

A path away from punishment is to try education first. If children failed to heed Grantham’s warnings, then punishment for stupidity is an option that’s left.
