Interview with Kristen Autobee, co-owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: Lakewood is home to Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and a burgeoning arts community. I own Red Herring Art Supply along with Robert Autobee, and we are excited to help our community’s artists create.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: We stock Rublev oils, natural pigments and ceracolor wax-based paints. Red Herring Art Supply wants to support the fashion design students and we also carry a variety of sketch pads. We will be donating a small percent of our sales to the 40 West Arts District. Red Herring Art Supply is a sponsor of the annual MuralFest. We believe that West Colfax Avenue has a colorful future through art.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: It is good to be around creative people.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Finding unique art supplies. We intend to carry brands that the other art supply stores in Denver don’t stock.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: We are both historians. I was a curator at the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Fla. We write about the past and want to liven up the present.
