Re: GOP shuts door on Senate action on Obama Supreme Court pick, Feb. 24 news story.
I did a spit-take when I read Sen. Mitch McConnell s justification for denying even a hearing for a possible Obama nomination to the Supreme Court. His denial was to protect the will of the American people, he said.
Well, the American people did express their will — twice — by electing Barack Obama and the progressive policies he ran on. Republicans immediately declared their enmity for the new president and pledged to block or obstruct his every move. They have been true to their word for seven years.
We no longer have a Congress doing the nation s business. We have a bunch of hard-right ideologues whose stated goal is obstruction. If you re fed up, you have a chance to start the correction in November.

Ruth Marcus closed her column with the following statement: Crazy times call for crazy suggestions. Well, mine may be the craziest, but it would be enlightening to see how the Republicans respond and behave if this crazy solution were to be implemented: Barack Obama resigns his presidency; Joe Biden is sworn in as president; and with his first act, he appoints Obama to the Supreme Court.
As a past president and a constitutional lawyer, the Republicans would be hard-pressed to claim Obama was not qualified, nor would they have grounds to deny him a confirmation hearing and vote.
What a lesson in politics, history and governance this would provide.
