After beginning February with a major snowfall, including about a foot in Denver, there was little snow through mid-February and milder air than expected.

Nonetheless, the ski season is OK in the mountains thanks to some lesser snow late in February.

The southern jet stream will become more active again during March, which should lead to two or three more opportunities for snowfall in Colorado. But the first couple of weeks look to be rather tranquil, with above-normal temperatures.

Long-range modeling shows a stormier and chillier pattern for the middle and latter part of March. Denver’s normal high and low temperatures will rise from 50 and 22 on March 1, to 58 and 30 F on March 31.

We look for precipitation to be above normal across Colorado, with southern parts of the state receiving the heaviest. Much of that precipitation will be snowfall, especially in the mountains, but Denver could get one or two snowfalls as well.

Temperatures will be pleasant many days during the first half of March, but they may drop with the anticipated storminess in middle and late March.

Overall, temperatures should average near normal for March, but they may be a little below normal in southern Colorado.
