Interview with Vikki King, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: Art at 6 is a husband-and-wife team of award-winning listed artists who are excited to show their art for the first time in the Denver metro area. We chose Lakewood because our home town of Austin, Texas, suffered gentrification throughout the city. This forced many creatives like us to relocate. Lakewood gives us the opportunity to share and belong to a fast-growing and forward-thinking center of art activity. My husband’s family emigrated to Denver in 1918 from Sweden. He wanted to revisit his roots, so we moved to Broncos country. We saw the need here for contemporary fine art that is relevant to people’s lives, that they would find uplifting, exciting and sexy.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: We specialize in fine art, decor, video and handmade jewelry. We also design and sell a line of 14 original and unique ouija boards, cannabis art, radical art, metal clay pendants and rare heritage Navajo gourds. Art at 6 offers studio pricing direct from the artists. Our artworks vary from items for home and office such as banyan wood pieces to modern figurative, expressionist and political paintings. We are currently showing two series of artworks: “Homage to Andy Warhol” and “Homage to Man Ray.” You’re sure to discover new artworks every time you visit.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: We love interacting with other artists and community members. Art shows at Art at 6 are so much fun. We all talk about the art, the process of creating and we form connections that can last a lifetime. Artists and our art clearly bring the community together. It is especially rewarding when young people see the art as a means of expression and get inspired to create.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: We strive to make the hidden gem of 40 West Studios an art destination. Our current plans are to organize exciting and sexy art festivals and shows that feature 40 West Studios artists every Friday. It’s called “Fridaylujah!” Forget First Friday — every Friday is “Fridaylujah!” at Art at 6 and 40 West Studios. Come join us!
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: We are devoted fans of USA Rugby, headquartered in Boulder, and have attended numerous games at Infinity Park in Glendale. We love rugby; we even create rugby art. As 40 West founding members, we are so pleased to join other artists at 40 West Studios, part of the newest and most exciting of Colorado’s creative arts districts.
