Ralphie, the University of Colorado mascot, has a solid chance of being displayed on the tail of a Frontier Airlines plane.

The Denver-based airline on Wednesday launched a contest that will allow the mascot of a team or organization to join the stable of wildlife already decorating its planes.

Airline spokesman Jim Faulkner said in early voting, behind the University of Florida’s Albert and Alberta Gator. But by noon, had moved into second place.

It’s not too late to get in on the voting — or the nominating. You can nominate your mascot at , where voting remains open through April 30. The winning mascot will be selected in May.

The airline will use a real-life depiction of the mascot on the tail and give it the nickname used by the team. For example, if University of Maryland wins, a terrapin will go on the tail and the critter would be called Testudo. If the mascot doesn’t have a nickname, Frontier reserves the right to select one.

If the winning team’s mascot is not an animal, the airline will select a North American animal and name it for the group. For example, if the Richfield Rockets win, the airline will pick an animal and call it “Rocket.”

No word on how the carrier might handle a win for mascot.

In addition to having a mascot on the tail of a new place, the winning organization also will receive 20 roundtrip airline tickets. And everyone who votes will be entered in a weekly drawing for a round-trip ticket valued at as much as $250.

Frontier is adding 19 new aircraft in 2016.
