Authorities on the Western Slope chased a stolen pickup truck on Interstate 70 through two counties Tuesday night at speeds of 110 mph before arresting a man and woman in Glenwood Springs.
The chase began in Mesa County after officials say two suspects, one of them from Kansas, car-jacked the vehicle after robbing a convenience store and took off eastbound on the interstate.
Garfield County sheriff’s deputies joined the pursuit when the chase entered their jurisdiction. At that time, the suspects were traveling at more than 100 mph.
Road spikes were deployed at two spots on I-70, flattening the front tires of the Dodge pickup.
“The vehicle continued with flat tires until the tires blew apart,” the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. “It finally slowed and turned off at exit 119, the No Name Exit.”
The suspects then led officers on a back-and-forth chase between Glenwood Springs and into Glenwood Canyon before a roadblock was set up and the pair was arrested about 8:30 p.m.
Authorities identified the driver arrested as Nathaniel Eugene Owens, a 35-year-old from Rifle. His passenger, who was also taken into custody, was Kelsy Lilah Capps, a 23-year-old from Wichita, Kan.
Both are being held at the Garfield County jail.
Police in Grand Junction say the pickup was carjacked in their town after the armed robbery of a convenience store.
Capps and Owens are suspected in Grand Junction of robbery, felony menacing, assault, theft and aggravated vehicle theft, authorities say. Charges against the duo in Garfield County are pending.
