At least one Colorado State Patrol trooper shot and killed a suspect at a gas station Thursday night in Pueblo County, officials say.

The name of the man who was fatally shot was not released.

Two troopers contacted a driver of a vehicle and his passenger, a woman, on a traffic stop at 8:19 p.m. Thursday near a gas station in Colorado City.

Circumstances surrounding the traffic stop remain under investigation, according to a Colorado Bureau of Investigation media release.

The driver attempted to flee by stealing another vehicle in the gas station parking lot, the CBI said. The fleeing suspect reportedly accelerated toward the troopers and was fired upon.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The troopers weren’t injured.

The incident is being investigated by the 10th Judicial District Critical Incident Team including the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

Information on the woman who was at the scene was not released.

The names of the two troopers involved were not released. They’re on paid administrative leave, which is standard practice.
